Bulb Plants
Aquarium Bulb Plants for Planted Tanks
Bulb plants are a unique category of aquatic plants that grow from a main bulb rather than more commonly seen stems or rhizomes. The bulb stores energy reserves for growth of root systems and foliage once established in aquaria. Here you’ll find popular bulb plants like Aponogeton, Nymphaea, and other varieties that bring beautiful foliage and texture to freshwater aquascapes or ponds.
Traits and Characteristics
Distinct Growth Form: Bulb plants typically produce large, flowing leaves that add a swaying motion and movement to planted tanks.Spotlight Aquarium Plant: These plants are typically capable of growing to impressive sizes. Some offer leaves up to 2 feet long when planted in setups that have enough space! Because of this, they also make great ornamental centerpiece plants in large-scale aquascaping.
Beginner-Friendly: Most aquarium bulbs are pretty hardy! Many species found here will tolerate a range of water parameters, making them suitable for beginners and experienced aquascapers. Just make sure your tank is big enough or upsize as the plant matures!
Seasonal Growing: Bulbs like Aponogeton can experience dormant periods. This means that they may lose leaves from time to time before regrowing. Don’t throw your plant away! Give it some rest and with the right conditions and care, it should begin producing new growth once the growing cycle resumes.
General Care Tips
When planting, make sure not to bury your bulb fully. If you're unsure which side sprouts new leaves, let your bulb sit on top of you aquarium substrate until you see signs of growth. Once sprouted, provide it with nutritious aquasoil or supplement with fertilizer root tabs. Good flow, moderate lighting and CO2 injection are bonuses that will boost growth speed and overall health.
