Aquarium mosses are versatile, low-maintenance plants that are used in planted aquariums, shrimp tanks, low-tech planted tanks, terrariums and aquascapes of all sizes. These live mosses and moss-like alternatives (liverworts) include aquascaping community favorites like Java Moss, Christmas Moss, Peacock Moss, Willow Moss, Fissidens Fontanus, Mini Pellia and more. Their fronds add soft texture and vibrant green color instantly to hardscape layouts while creating natural hiding spots for small aquatic critters.
Overall aquarium moss is a top low light aquatic plant for beginners and experts. It grows fast, is low maintenance and is a great introduction to growing live plants in an aquarium—no green thumb required!
Can I Grow Moss in a Low-Light Tank?
Absolutely. Classic planted tank mosses like Java or Christmas adapt well to lower light exposure. Growth may be a little slower, but it will also reduce chances of algae appearing.
How Do I Attach Moss to Wood & Rocks?
You can tie moss down with cotton thread or use adhesive like cyanoacrylate glue (aquarium-safe super glue). The great thing about moss is that it will naturally attach over time. We also like using stainless steel mesh for loose moss to grow easy-to-use, weighted moss pads.
Is Moss Good for Aquariums?
Short answer, yes. Like all live aquatic plants, moss offers several benefits to planted tanks! It helps with nutrient absorption and provides natural coverage for fish and shrimp.
Quick Care Tips for Live Moss
Most prefer stable temperatures below 74°F. Keep up with water changes to maintain clean water and trim as needed.
