OVERVIEW
Aquascaping a shallow tank with tons of depth isn't an easy task. Our goal was to utilize the aquarium's full space and create the illusion of added depth. Going into this project, we knew that we wanted to scape with Icelandic Lava Stone. We've never used it and compared to the standard Black Lava Rock, Icelandic Lava Rock has defined character and varying coloration. One of the great features that all aquarium Lava Rocks has is its lightweight density which means more bang for your buck. Through careful selection that was based on the unique dimensions of this tank, we moved on to create two high sloping hills on each side. The Icelandic Lava Stone hardscape was then put in place to surround and support the hills of planted aquarium substrate. Meanwhile, a path was created with fine natural sand to further emphasize depth in this low planted tank. Filling this tank was simple as there was less ground to cover. A combination of aquatic foreground plants such as Utricularia Graminifolia, Hemianthus Callitrichoides ‘Cuba', Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo’ and Microcarpaea Minima Merrill were used with the intention of letting these aquatic species intertwine for naturally wild look. As a result this tropic inspired island look was brought to life.CARE
