Lost in the Moss: A Beginner's Guide to Aquarium Moss
Java Moss (Vesicularia Dubyana)
Java Moss is one of the best aquarium plants or aquatic mosses for beginners and those who are looking for an easy aquatic plant for a low-tech planted aquarium. Well-regarded for its unmatched resilience, Java Moss will grow in nearly any freshwater aquarium. Its deep green color and fine fronds soften aquascapes, creating a lush, natural forest-like appearance in planted aquariums. Its adaptability makes it a top aquarium moss for low-tech aquariums, where it can grow without CO2 injection or intense lighting. Alternatively, Java Moss is great for shrimp tanks, breeding setups and more as its growing style provides the perfect habitat for coverage and security.
Java Moss is also commonly used to cover small stones for aquascaping accents in planted aquariums. Aquarium mosses also make great makeshift foliage for bonsai driftwood to produce underwater tree aquascapes and more. The addition of CO2 injection and higher lighting will encourage faster and more robust growth. Once established, Java Moss may need routine maintenance to prevent it from overtaking the aquarium. We recommend pulling or removing manually. If using aquascaping tools, try turning off the filter as aquarium moss will grow anywhere it lands!

Aquarium plants can vary in growth form and may require time to transition to your aquarium environment, whether grown submerged or emersed. This transition period is a natural part of establishing healthy, long-term growth in planted aquariums.
From carpeting plants in the foreground to stem plants and larger species used in the midground or background, each plant offers a unique contribution to a balanced and natural aquascape. As plants adapt, it is normal to see minor changes such as leaf melt, color shifts, or new growth patterns as they settle into their new conditions.
We carefully inspect and prepare all live aquatic plants prior to shipping. While we do our best to minimize hitchhikers, we cannot guarantee plants to be completely pest or snail-free unless tissue culture options are selected.
Because live plants are perishable, some signs of transit stress may occur, including leaf loss or cosmetic damage. These are typically temporary and when when healthy roots are present, most plants will recover with proper care.
