Microsorum Pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is a classic aquarium plant in the planted tank hobby. A fantastic choice for beginner aquarists, Java Fern has earned a reputation for being nearly bulletproof as it almost requires some effort to kill and will tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions. Microsorum Pteropus is an epiphytic plant making it versatile with placement. This aquarium plant will happily grow attached to aquarium driftwood or when placed in the crevices of an aquascape layout. Its bright green, broad foliage is a great way to fill in areas lacking coverage. Like most aquarium plant species, Java Fern can be grown in low tech conditions, but the addition of CO2 injection will produce a noticeable difference in growth rate and appearance. Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the hobby as Microsorum pteropus.
Microsorum Pteropus can be attached directly to driftwood, rocks, or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted/reattached.

Aquarium plants can vary in growth form and may require time to transition to your aquarium environment, whether grown submerged or emersed. This transition period is a natural part of establishing healthy, long-term growth in planted aquariums.
From carpeting plants in the foreground to stem plants and larger species used in the midground or background, each plant offers a unique contribution to a balanced and natural aquascape. As plants adapt, it is normal to see minor changes such as leaf melt, color shifts, or new growth patterns as they settle into their new conditions.
We carefully inspect and prepare all live aquatic plants prior to shipping. While we do our best to minimize hitchhikers, we cannot guarantee plants to be completely pest or snail-free unless tissue culture options are selected.
Because live plants are perishable, some signs of transit stress may occur, including leaf loss or cosmetic damage. These are typically temporary and when when healthy roots are present, most plants will recover with proper care.

Rhizome plants are known for their durability and unique growth structure, making them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers. Instead of being planted directly into the substrate, these plants grow from a horizontal rhizome that should be attached to hardscape such as driftwood or stone.
Burying the rhizome can lead to rot, so it is best to secure the plant using thread, glue, or by gently wedging it into place. Over time, the roots will naturally attach to the surface as the plant continues to grow and spread.
Rhizome plants are generally slow-growing and require minimal maintenance, making them ideal for low-tech aquariums. Their sturdy leaves and gradual growth provide long-term stability and are often used to create detailed focal points or anchor hardscape within a layout.
Common examples include Anubias, Bucephalandra, and Java Fern, all loved for their resilience and easy care.

Bucephalandra and Anubias self-attached to driftwood

"Got like 15 individual plants tied together, cut the twine, unraveled them, and basically every single plant is doing well. Also left one tied together to keep the bushy, pleasant looking appearance, and it’s doing fine as well. Very affordable, very straightforward, highly recommend."
