Why should I have a fully planted aquarium?
Fully planted aquariums provide many great benefits to the overall health of fish tanks. Live aquatic plants provide safe spaces for sensitive or shy tropical fish and shrimp. They also act as natural filtration, absorbing excess elements and nutrients in the water that can be harmful in elevated levels. Aquarium plants also provide oxygen for livestock and beneficial bacteria to thrive.

A Brief Overview of Aquascaping Zones

Foreground Plants

These aquatic plants are positioned front and center in most aquascapes. They are usually short in height and grow low in a horizontal manner for ground coverage. The term foreground plant is basically synonymous with carpeting aquarium plant and includes species like Monte Carlo, Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’ (HC), Utricularia graminifolia (UG) and Eleocharis varieties (dwarf hairgrass). In-between plants, like Cryptocoryne parva or Marsilea hirsuta, are great choices for transitioning into the midground.

Midground Plants

The midground section of a planted aquarium is broad and varied, featuring plants of moderate height. Popular choices include shorter stem plants and clump-forming or rosette plants like Cryptocoryne species. It also includes plants attached to hardscape, such as Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java Fern, and various aquatic mosses. Compact stem plants like Hemianthus micranthemoides (pearl weed) and Staurogyne repens are also common choices. Although categorized as stem plants, they do not grow as tall or fast as other stems often planted in the background.

Background Plants

These are the tallest and largest plants in an aquascape, typically planted along the back panel and corners of rimless tanks. They create the lush backdrop for your aquarium. Species like Cyperus helferi, Vallisneria sp. (Jungle Vals), Rotala, and Ludwigia grow long, producing flowing foliage that fills the background and moves gently with the water flow.

Arrived vibrant and healthy

"Absolutely beautiful. I've boughten plants from a few of the more well know websites but these were superior."

Just about perfect!

"I’m a complete beginner and asked for some easy to grow plants for a nano tank and that appears to be exactly what I received! Everything is thriving a month later except some grass that arrived wilted and brown to begin with. The other plants were very carefully packaged and arrived in fantastic shape, a great variety of healthy plants!"

Great value!

"Plants came in healthy! There's been melt on some of the carpeting plants but I expect them to bounce back. Great growth on the stem plants already - I highly recommend!"

Emma K. (5/5)

Nice collection of plants!

"Received a nice collection! All plants arrived healthy and had no melting. I do wish that they were labeled so I could do a bit more research on each plant, but a good deal regardless :)"

David B. (4/5)

Amazing value

"Plants that came from this is amazing. Packaged very well and little to no melt on the plants. They all eventually made full recovery. I wish they put labels on each of the plants so I knew which is what. Took me a good while to figure out! Great purchase!"

Fabulous!

"Got the large pack to plant in my 29 gallon community tank and was absolutely delighted. There was enough variety that the scape has interest to it but each plant had at least 2 bundles/pots so you don’t have just a random single bunch sticking out and you can fill everything in. Was especially pleased that the carpeting species had 5-6 bundles so I could really fill in the foreground and “hill” without having a huge waiting period for it to grow in. A couple of the crypts are had some tantrum melts, but nothing dead 2 weeks in now and plenty of new growth coming in. I had some issues with shipping the substrate (different website) so these had to be temporarily housed in an empty 10 gallon with a bubbler for about a week. Even with the wait time of top of shipping all of the plants were healthy looking and had no issues. Highly recommend if you’re like me and not especially skilled at visualizing how a group of plants would look together, or if you’re just up for a pleasant surprise."

Wonderful variety

"All plants came in healthy. I enjoyed getting a mystery of plants to fill my tank. It let's me work with plants I might now normally get."

Q&A

I’m very interested to buy live plants but I’m wondering if I need an special substrate. Right now I have 10Gl tank with Imagitarium White Sand Aquarium Substrate with couple of Anubias and Amazon sword with a CO2 difusor. Also another 20GL only river stones. Both are freshwater.
I know the Anubias can live in anything, you are not supposed to bury the rhizome, the segmented stem in anything rlly, but the roots will continue to seek out rich substrate their whole life. In my experience amazon sword will grow in many substrates, especially if you use some sort of root tabs or under the sand fertilizer. If you have no livestock i would personally push aside some sand and replant my plants in a proper nutient rich substrate like UNS Controsoil or ADA Amazonia, just a little patch of rich stuff for the plants. If you do have livestock tho and cant fully drain the tank i might just get some root tabs or fertilizer pills to jam near the roots of the sword in the sand. I guarantee that everything will grow better with some sort of substrate fertilizers of any sort.
