Ultum Nature Systems shallow aquariums offer a low-profile design that naturally shifts perspective and encourages a stronger focus on hardscape composition. Their reduced height allows more light to reach the substrate more directly, highlighting aquatic plant detail, hardscape texture, and negative space within the aquascape.

This open format is especially well-suited for iwagumi layouts and indoor, pond-inspired designs that combine emersed plant growth with submerged life below. With a range of sizes available, compact models fit beautifully on desktops, nightstands, or console tables, while larger sizes offer a unique way to introduce a more design-driven nature aquarium into any space.

Shallow aquariums can support a variety of aquatic life, but they are often chosen for setups where aquascaping and plant growth take the spotlight. Their open layout makes them great for top-down viewing, offering a different way to experience and keep a planted aquarium.

Each one contains a different aquarium plant roster, hardscape choice and final look —all within the same shallow format. Let's get into it!

A Carnivorous Plant Display

First up, let’s talk about our 2.5 gallon Ultum Nature Systems 5S aquarium. This tank is small and fit perfectly on top of many pieces of common furniture. (Think a console table or tv stand) We wanted something that would be low-maintenance without sacrificing aesthetic. We picked a handful of carnivorous plants, like Utricularia graminifolia (UG) and Drosera rotundifolia, and grew them using the Dry Start Method (DSM). This build let us experience growing plants we weren’t privy to prior and let us observe how these plants use their mucilage (sticky tentacles) to catch and consume small prey! With the help of a UNS Atomizer, we successfully kept a compact and unique planted setup that supported various types of plants.

Low-Profile Iwagumi Layout

Moving up in size, we have one of our most viral tanks AND most popular choices—the UNS 60S 10-gallon shallow rimless aquarium. For this setup, we created a classic Iwagumi layout with Icelandic Lava Rock. We used two substrate types and completed the look with miniature aquatic plants. Doing this helped make the scape appear much larger than it was IRL. This particular aquascape is one of our favorites and you guys loved it too!

Hybrid Planted Paludarium

Our final and largest shallow rimless aquarium is one of our newest creations. We spent a lot of time repositioning the driftwood to ensure the structure would be fit for supporting a variety of emersed plants. Below the waterline, our intention was to keep it simple and chose a mix of aquarium epiphytes and cryptocoryne plants that would grow well in lower lighting conditions given our top heavy design. Housed in the Ultum Nature Systems 75S, this is one of the largest models in the shallow series, holding roughly 27 gallons. This hybrid design blends traditional aquascaping with terrestrial growth, combining elements of different (but similar) hobbies together.

"Beautiful aquarium. Love the chamfered edges (or mitered cut, as they call it). Only thing is that it came with some small scratches, but nothing I’d fuss too much about. Then i noticed a few more scratches. I have been dry-scraping to see what look I want, so I’m sure I do it, but I’ve been very careful and I’ve done this with several tanks in the past that didn’t scratch as easily. Maybe its the ultra-clear glass is more prone to scratch, I dunno."

I have a small 3-4 inch filter I’d like to add onto the tank, would that be a little too big or bulky for the 5S tank? If not would a Nano canister filter with standard lily pipes and outflow pipes work? I’m trying to achieve a minimal look. Thanks!: I am using a canister filter with nano-sized lily pipes. Seems to be working great so far and tank has been running almost 6 months. Standard lily pipes won’t work. Definitely get the nano-sized ones.
