Quick Introduction to Betta Fish
Betta Splendens, commonly known as Betta fish or Siamese fighting fish, belong to a genus that includes over 70 recognized species. Popular for beginners, Bettas are often picked as a first pet fish thanks to their vivid color, interactive behavior and easy care. They are also great for those with limited space, as they don’t require large aquariums to thrive. While Bettas are generally hardy, this also makes them commonly mistreated. To help your Betta live a healthy and happy life, we’ve put together essential Betta fish care tips and tricks!
How to care for Betta Fish
The first step in proper Betta fish care is maintaining good water conditions. These fun fish prefer slightly acidic water around 6.8, but will tolerate a range between 6-8. In the wild, Bettas live in waters that are rich in organic matter that contribute to this preference. To emulate similar conditions, consider using materials in your aquarium tank that will naturally help lower pH. We like using natural driftwood or Indian Almond Leaves (IAL) to help gently lower pH levels. In addition, maintaining a clean and well-kept aquarium is essential. Always keep a dechlorinator to ensure chlorine and heavy metals are removed during routine water changes and tank maintenance.
What type of filter does a Betta need?
Quality aquarium filtration is key for all freshwater fish, and should never be overlooked. Modern Betta varieties are often bred to have large fins, which contribute to poor swimming and sensitivity to strong currents. Avoid aquarium filters that produce strong direct flow. Instead, opt for filters or outflow attachments that diffuse water to provide your betta with gentle flow.
Ideal water temperature for Betta fish
Betta fish originate from warm, tropical regions where temperatures range between 76°F and 80°F. Water that is too cold or too hot can lead to poor health, sluggish behavior and a weakened immune system.
Bonus Betta Care Tips
- Add live aquarium plants! Betta fish love to forage, explore and will greatly appreciate some coverage. Live aquatic plants also help with water oxygenation and purification.
- Daily exercise. Use a reflective surface to encourage a good flare. Consistency helps your Betta stay strong and active.
- Use an aquarium lid. Bettas are great jumpers, so a tank lid is recommended. Avoid sealed fits as Bettas need to come to the surface for air.
