Taking a modern and minimalist approach, these rimless tanks Ultum Nature Systems are crafted with precision from 91% clarity Diamant glass and high-grade German silicone glue. Special care is taken to blend the panels of glass seamlessly with 45° mitered edges resulting in beautiful aesthetic and unlimited room for depth and creativity – an aquascaper’s dream.

Shown in the video below is an Ultum Nature Systems 60S shallow rimless tank:

Shallow aquariums offer a low panoramic view that encourages creative aquascaping, as their reduced height is balanced by the depth they provide. These tanks are excellent canvases for growing aquatic plants emerged or for designing indoor, pond-style layouts. Ideal for desktops, nightstands, and console tables, their compact size makes them a practical option for smaller spaces. Perfect for lower level aquatic life, fish like Corydoras pygmaeus or Pygmy Cory Cats make great tank inhabitants as they tend to shoal together on the bottom of the tank and their curious sifting is fun to observe. Available in multiple sizes, shallow aquarium tanks are the perfect way to introduce a unique nature aquarium into your space.

Scapelight: The Art of Shallow

Shallow aquariums offer a low-profile height and open canvas, perfect for creative ideas and scaping experiments. From nature-style layouts and Iwagumi scapes to hybrid paludarium builds or mini indoor ponds, they’re perfect for growing every aquatic plant under the sun and testing your luck with different design styles. With multiple sizes in the lineup, there’s a size for everyone and they’re wildly versatile! To show this, we’re going to highlight three aquascapes we’ve done in shallow tanks. Each one contains a different aquarium plant roster, hardscape choice and final look —all within the same shallow format. Let's get into it!

UNS 5S

2.5 GALLONS
A Carnivorous Plant Display

First up, let’s talk about our 2.5 gallon Ultum Nature Systems 5S aquarium. This tank is small and fit perfectly on top of many pieces of common furniture. (Think a console table or tv stand) We wanted something that would be low-maintenance without sacrificing aesthetic. We picked a handful of carnivorous plants, like Utricularia graminifolia (UG) and Drosera rotundifolia, and grew them using the Dry Start Method (DSM). This build let us experience growing plants we weren’t privy to prior and let us observe how these plants use their mucilage (sticky tentacles) to catch and consume small prey! With the help of a UNS Atomizer, we successfully kept a compact and unique planted setup that supported various types of plants.

Tank Dimensions: 14.17 x 8.66 x 4.72”
Plants Used: Utricularia Graminifolia, Drosera Rotundifolia, Mini Christmas Moss
Hardscape: Pacific Driftwood
Substrate: UNS Controsoil

UNS 60S

10.2 GALLONS
Low-Profile Iwagumi Layout

Moving up in size, we have one of our most viral tanks AND most popular choices—the UNS 60S 10-gallon shallow rimless aquarium. For this setup, we created a classic Iwagumi layout with Icelandic Lava Rock. We used two substrate types and completed the look with miniature aquatic plants. Doing this helped make the scape appear much larger than it was IRL. This particular aquascape is one of our favorites and you guys loved it too!

Tank Dimensions: 23.62 x 14.17 x 7.08”
Plants Used: Hemianthus Callitrichoides ‘Cuba’, Microcarpaea Minima Merrill, Mini Pellia
Hardscape: Icelandic Lava Stone
Substrate: UNS Controsoil, Fine Natural Sand

UNS 75S

26 GALLONS
Hybrid Planted Paludarium

Our final and largest shallow rimless aquarium is one of our newest creations. We spent a lot of time repositioning the driftwood to ensure the structure would be fit for supporting a variety of emersed plants. Below the waterline, our intention was to keep it simple and chose a mix of aquarium epiphytes and cryptocoryne plants that would grow well in lower lighting conditions given our top heavy design. Housed in the Ultum Nature Systems 75S, this is one of the largest models in the shallow series, holding roughly 27 gallons. This hybrid design blends traditional aquascaping with terrestrial growth, combining elements of different (but similar) hobbies together.

Tank Dimensions: 29.52 x 17.71 x 11.81”
Plants Used: Bolbitis Difformis ‘Mini’, Assorted Anubias, Homalomena, Cryptocoryne, Trichomanes Javanicum, Selaginella Erythropus ‘Red’
Hardscape: Malaysian Driftwood, Ancient Stone
Substrate: Aquario Neo Soil, UNS Controsand (Monterey)

Remember, we've shared three examples that only scratch the surface of what’s possible with a shallow aquarium. Whether you enjoy minimalistic aquarium design or dramatic, heavy hardscape work, there’s endless room for your creative juice to flow. Stick with the classics or challenge the boundaries of traditional aquascaping, the choice is yours!
