What is an Iwagumi Aquascape?
Minimalist. Intentional. Rocks-only.
An Iwagumi aquascape is a Japanese-inspired layout built around carefully selected stones and typically a single, cohesive aquarium foreground plant species. The goal is harmony through simplicity, where every element has purpose.
The Foundation: Understanding Iwagumi Layout
Position stones using the golden ratio (slightly off center), and avoid symmetry as nature rarely repeats itself.
Substrate & Preparation
A successful carpet starts at the base.
- Use a high-quality aquasoil (like UNS Controsoil)
- Slope substrate from front to back for depth
- Mist the substrate before planting to keep plants hydrated
STEP 1. Divide Your Plants
Use aquascaping tweezers and plant at an angle.
- Insert deep into substrate
- Space evenly (about 1/2 - 1" apart)
- Avoid clumping too tightly
This ensures roots establish instead of floating up.
STEP 2. Precision Planting
Use aquascaping tweezers and plant at an angle.
- Insert deep into substrate
- Space evenly (about 1/2 - 1" apart)
- Avoid clumping too tightly
This ensures roots establish instead of floating up.
Dry Start or flood right away?
Dry Start Method (DSM)
PROS
- Faster carpet growth
- Allows for less initial plant mass
- Reduced plant melt
- Less initial maintenance (just mist down and maintain humidity)
- More time to gather required equipment such as filters, heaters and lights
CONS
- Potential mold growth due to over misting and higher humidty which will melt plants quickly
- Potential plant dry out
Flooded
PROS
- Immediate tank setup
- Requires strong CO2 and flow
CONS
- Initial new tank start algae maintenance
- Potential substrate collapse
- Floating plants due to plant roots not established
Best Foreground Plants for Iwagumi Aquascapes
Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo’
- Easier alternative to HC Cuba
- Slightly larger leaves, faster growth
- More forgiving in varied conditions
Perfect for: beginners or low-maintenance Iwagumi
Eleocharis Parvula Mini
- Wispy texture adds movement
- Fast grower
- Very forgiving in varied conditions
Perfect for: a softer Iwagumi look
Hemianthus Callitrichoides ‘Cuba'
- Ultra-fine leaves create a dense, lush carpet
- Requires high light and CO2
- Not very forgiving
Perfect for: compact carpet and nano aquariums
Utricularia Graminifolia
- Short thick and bright green grass
- Requires high light and CO2
- Not forgiving at all
Perfect for: compact carpet and creating a dramatic hill effect
Glossostigma Elatinoides
- A classic Iwagumi choice
- Requires high light and CO2
- Requires consistent trimming to stay low
Perfect for: Vibrant carpets with a classic look
What else should I consider?
Lighting, CO2 & Flow
To achieve a true Iwagumi carpet:
- Lighting: Medium to high (consistent spread)
- CO₂: Strongly recommended for dense growth
- Flow: Even circulation prevents dead zones
Consistency matters more than intensity.
Maintenance & Long-Term Success
- Trim regularly to encourage horizontal growth
- Remove debris to prevent algae buildup
- Perform weekly water changes (especially early stages)
A clean carpet is a healthy carpet.
