Kami Haus is a playful low-tech planted aquarium created to show a lighter side of aquascaping. Nature aquariums and serious aquascaping are fun and all, but we can't deny a little moss-covered house is cute. We're not above it!

Rather than treating aquarium decor as an afterthought, we built the layout around it. A simple mixture of natural stone, sand, and grey river slate creates a small pathway through the foreground, while live aquatic moss softens the surrounding landscape. The house itself features a live moss roof, helping the decorative element blend naturally into the planted aquarium.

The setup was intentionally kept simple and approachable, making it a fun project for a young aquascaper—or anyone really! We still incorporated many of the same ideas used throughout our other layouts: thoughtful placement, varying textures, and live plants. Even when the focal point happens to be a tiny house, the fundamentals of creating a cohesive planted aquarium still apply.

Kami Haus is a reminder that not every planted aquarium has to follow traditional aquascaping rules. Sometimes creating something fun is reason enough to build a tank—and it can still provide a healthy environment for livestock and a refreshing creative outlet.
