Phoenix Rising is a large 72-gallon nature-style planted aquarium built in the ADA 120P rimless tank. Large pieces of Malaysian driftwood were modified and positioned to create an aggressive aquascape layout. Given the size of this aquarium, the hardscape went through several stages before even reaching the initial planting phase.

Once finalized, we allowed the wood to fully waterlog, weighing it down with dense stones placed on top. After several weeks of soaking, the driftwood was covered in Mini Pellia. Due to the sheer size of the tank, we wanted to ensure it had enough time to properly attach to the wood, otherwise we would have nearly 70 gallons of water filled with floating pellia.

At this stage, the aquascape transformed into a large, humid, terrarium-like environment. A retrofit spraying and fogging system was installed to maintain elevated humidity and allow the moss to establish a stronger hold before moving into the planting phase. Fissidens was also introduced as a secondary moss to intertwine and layer over time. From there, several aquarium plant species were added into nearly every nook and crevice to create a natural, subtly chaotic look.

Inspired by fallen trees in the forest, the intention was to create a slice of undisturbed nature. A variety of livestock, from bottom-dwelling Corydoras, Amano shrimp, and Neocaridina to mid-level swimmers and free agents, were added to bring life, movement, and unique character to the layout.
