Verdant Spring
Verdant Spring is a simple indoor pond-inspired shrimp tank created in the Ultum Nature Systems 5S 2.5-gallon shallow aquarium. Nano shallow tanks and paludariums offer a unique way to bring nature into a space without a large commitment, and this layout leans heavily into that idea—it is minimal, low-maintenance, with no CO2 and no filter.
Inspired by several of our previous aquascapes, this setup blends concepts from shallow Iwagumi layouts, nano paludariums, and wabi-kusa-style planting. Lava rock was used to create a natural stone scape, paired with a gravel base, while grass-like plants were encouraged to grow emersed above the waterline, creating contrast between submerged and marginal growth.
To support this transition, we used an Ultum Nature Systems Atomizer to produce a light mist across the surface. This helps plants like Persicaria (Polygonum sp.), later swapped to Juncus repens, adapt to emersed conditions while also creating gentle water movement. Despite its simplicity, the tank remains healthy and stable, with plants actively growing in and filling the space over time. Maintenance is minimal—just regular observation, time, and simple weekly water changes. The result is a calm, pond-like display that feels natural, dynamic, and easy to maintain within a compact footprint.
