Winter Solstice is a Hakkai Stone Iwagumi aquascape in the Ultum Nature Systems 90L rimless aquarium. Inspired by the start of winter, this layout blends our appreciation for traditional Iwagumi with a more contemporary approach. Four oversized Hakkai Stones take center stage, intentionally moving away from the classic rule of odd-numbered stone composition.

In a traditional Iwagumi planted aquarium, you would expect a minimal layout with a clear sense of hierarchy and scale. For this setup, we introduced a layered substrate using four variations of Ultum Nature Systems Controsoil natural sand to create a gradual transition from lighter tones to deeper, darker hues. This subtle shift adds depth, contrast, and a soft visual gradient throughout the aquascape.

The final result resembles a grassy meadow touched by the first snowfall of the season. The Hakkai Stones guide the eye with their natural flow, while their porous, weathered textures—shaped over time—bring a sense of age and quiet movement to the layout.
