Flora Green

Flora Green is a nature-style aquascape in the UNS 60U rimless aquarium. After running larger planted tanks with primarily stone layouts, we wanted to switch things up and use a classic nature aquarium hardscape we didn’t often use at the time — Malaysian Driftwood.

Several large pieces were arranged in a triangular layout atop a high slope of Aquario Neo Soil. Allowing the wood to extend above the waterline during this time gave the tank a more exaggerated look. It was also a period when gluing hardscape wasn’t as common or popular, so we relied on large stones to weigh the wood down and prevent floating.

Although all signs pointed to a high-tech planted aquarium, we leaned toward a roster of low-maintenance, low-light aquatic plants for contrast and balance. Species like Bolbitis, Nymphaea, Anubias, and Bucephalandra were selected for their durability, beautiful color, and texture. In the foreground, instead of our usual Monte Carlo or HC carpet, we opted for Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae (Micro Sword) mixed with Marsilea and Cryptocoryne to create a more untamed, naturally chaotic appearance.

The overall theme behind this aquascape was simple — change things up. Experimenting with different materials, aquarium plants, and layout styles keeps aquascaping fresh, and this tank became a reminder that stepping outside of our usual preferences often leads to the most rewarding results.
