Scapelight - The Standard Form
In aquarium terms, “standard” refers to a proportionally balanced, rectangular tank with more than 9 gallons of total water volume. This category includes some of the largest aquariums that modern-day hobbyists can fit into their homes! They’re a pillar of the aquarium hobby—they’re easy to maintain and balance thanks to their physical space and water volume. Some of our favorites (and best-selling sizes) include the Ultum Nature Systems 45U (9-gallon) and 60U (20-gallon) rimless tanks. Let’s highlight past planted tanks in each of these classics.

UNS 45U
Green Haven
This nature-style planted tank came to life in the UNS 45U standard rimless glass aquarium. The main star was carefully selected Malaysian Driftwood that would influence every decision made afterwards. Teetering between a centered and triangular layout, this aquascape remains in our personal top favorites. (We think the scape community might agree!) We completed the look with focus on the fine details. Everything from moss-covered wood and epiphytic aquarium plant placement to supporting stones, accent gravel, and equipment was chosen with care and intention.
Tank Dimensions: 17.71 x 11.02 x 11.02”
Plants Used: Rotala sp., Bolbitis Heudelotti, Peacock Moss, Mixed Bucephalandra sp.
Hardscape: Malaysian Driftwood, Manten Stone
Substrate: Tropica Aquasoil, Natural Sand & Gravel

UNS 60U
Green Glacier
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Green Glacier is an Iwagumi aquascape that features heavy Seiryu Stone work in the 20-gallon Ultum Nature Systems 60U aquarium. The UNS 60U is our go-to recommendation for a standard-sized planted tank—and a best-seller at that. It’s well-balanced: not small enough to be considered a nano aquarium, yet big enough to comfortably support a sizable school of tropical fish like Tetras or Rasboras. This aquascape is a great example of fully utilizing the UNS 60U’s spacious dimensions, with high sloping substrate topped off with one of our favorite aquarium carpeting plants, Micranthemum ‘Monte Carlo’.
Tank Dimensions:23.62 x 14.17 x 14.17”
Plants Used: Micranthemum ‘Monte Carlo’
Hardscape: Seiryu Stone
Substrate: UNS Controsoil, UNS Controbase

Together, these aquascapes highlight the versatility of Ultum Nature Systems Standard Rimless Aquariums. From intricate woodwork to dynamic stone layouts, a standard tank can support it all. What will you create next?
