What we like about the Mighty Aquarium HOB Filter

Beginner-Friendly: HOB, aka hang on back, filters are a top pick for beginner hobbyists due to ease of use and simple design. This type of filter is commonly used for nano aquariums, breeding projects or aquariums that require a gentler flow.
Quick Installation: HOB filters are easy to install and can be quickly secured to the rim of the desired aquarium. The Mighty Aquarium HOB filter includes a leveling knob that ensures the filter unit stays upright. This added stability improves flow and allows for optimal performance.
Easy Maintenance: Hang on back filters are easy to maintain and clean. When compared to canister filters, HOB filters can be easily dismantled and thoroughly cleaned. Like other aquarium filters, the included media (sponge or cartridge) should be cleaned regularly and periodically replaced. Click here to purchase replacement media!

Going With the Flow—or Against the Current? Aquarium Filtration 101

Are you choosing the right aquarium filter for your planted tank? For many, a new tank includes a filter purchase to “keep it clean”. Is it really that straightforward? Our simple answer is no, and before you scroll past, hear us out.

There are many factors to consider when planning or budgeting for your aquarium’s filtration. We’ll argue that filtration is the heart of an aquarium. It is one of the most important pieces to keep a successful planted tank. Proper filtration offers several benefits: improving flow, and circulation, increasing water volume and keeping your tank clean in between water changes and filter maintenance.

A smaller hang-on-back aquarium filter is a great choice for nano tanks

Larger canister filters provide flexible, customizable flow options and a cleaner aesthetic for all aquariums

Why is better flow and circulation important?

Strong consistent flow is better for CO2 and nutrient distribution. Better flow means fewer dead spots in an aquarium. Dead spots are areas that receive little to no flow and are usually where the first signs of algae will appear. This is why we will always recommend larger filters with reasonable flow rates for aquascapers of all levels.

Keep in mind that it’s common practice for aquarium filters to be rated for much larger tanks. While these ratings may be accurate for an empty tank, they often don’t account for a multitude of factors that can alter this rating—like hardscape blocking flow or the addition of filter media such as sponges or bio media that can reduce flow rate. This means that a canister filter rated for aquariums up to 29 gallons might actually be perfect for a UNS 45U (9-gallon) tank instead.

While we’re on the topic of canister filters, one of their best advantages is the flexibility with positioning! This type of aquarium filter lets you place the inflow and outflow pipe wherever you’d like, allowing you to intentionally divert or guide flow direction in a way that will suit your planted tank best. You can also adjust flow strength and style with optional valve taps and lily pipe accessories! In comparison, hang-on-back filters are one-directional and more limited. With this type of filter, you’d need to physically move the entire thing to another area of the tank with little wiggle room for customizing. Overall, a big canister for a small aquarium isn’t a problem. We suggest trying one size larger and your planted aquarium will grow into it!

Aquascaper’s tip: Canister filters are also compatible with inline equipment like heaters, CO2 diffusers and UV filters. Inline aquarium equipment is a great way to provide whatever benefit you need, while keeping it out of your tank. Out of sight, out of mind. Now that’s nice and tidy!

A canister filter can be used on even smaller nano aquariums. This one is a 6 gallon tank equipped with an Ultum Nature Systems Delta 30.

Other benefits of getting a large aquarium filter

If you’re skeptical, think about a vacuum for your home. A larger vacuum can pick up more dust and debris before needing to be emptied, making the job quicker. The same logic applies to an aquarium! Canister filters require less frequent maintenance when compared to hang-on-back (HOB) filters because they’re simply larger and hold more water volume. A larger surface area also means more room for beneficial bacteria to grow. A healthy colony can keep your planted aquarium stable for longer in the event of a power outage or if you need to shut down your tank for an extended period of time.

We can’t knock HOB filters. They have their pros as well such as affordability and easy set up. They’re great for nano tanks, but they will require more frequent maintenance.

How often do I need to clean my aquarium filter?

Too often, we've learned that some aquarists believe filter cleaning isn't necessary—a myth, a fable! Please, don’t do this. A good rule of thumb is to clean hang-on-back (HOB) filters about once every two weeks, and canister filters every 3 to 6 months. As with everything, there are things to keep in mind, YMMV.

Your overall setup, its age and bioload will determine how often you need to buckle up for filter maintenance. Our Ultum Nature Systems R60 Reef System with Ranchu goldfish has a built-in multi-stage filter sump. If you’ve ever kept any type of fancy goldfish, you’ll know they’re cute but create massive amounts of waste. This type of aquarium and fish will require more maintenance to ensure healthy, clean water. Luckily, sump filters are open filter systems making them relatively easy to access and clean. On the flip side, a nano planted tank that’s moderately planted with a small school of nano fish or a single Betta may be perfectly fine with a clean every few months. Like we said, YMMV.

We realize that there are many different types of planted aquariums and aquatic pets that have different flow requirements. For example, Betta Fish and Neo Caridina Shrimp tend to prefer calmer waters. At the end of the day, it’s all about finding the right balance that works for you and your tank. We hope this helped shed some light on choosing the right filter for your planted aquarium.
