Green Forest Entrance
Green Forest Entrance is an oldie but a goodie — a planted aquarium created over 10 years ago that still sparks questions from hobbyists. Inspired by past travel, the aquascape aims to evoke a forbidden forest look, full of mystery and natural depth.
This large, 40 gallon tank features multiple moderately sized pieces of Manzanita Wood, which were soaked in water for two months before being added to the layout. Initially, palm-sized patches of live aquatic moss were attached to the branches. Over time, the moss grew and eventually covered each fully, replicating pieces of moss-covered wood you’d see in nature.
The tank was originally built to compete in the 2006 International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest (IAPLC), where it earned a world ranking of No. 77. Healthy, fast-growing plants were required and many lessons were learned along the way. Even after a decade, Green Forest Entrance influences our plans for forest-style aquascaping and demonstrates how patience, planning and strategic plant placement can produce long-lasting, successful planted aquariums.
